Pressure ulcers
Pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores or decubitus ulcers, are localised injuries to the skin and underlying tissue that occur due to prolonged pressure, typically over bony areas. They often develop in individuals who are immobile or have limited mobility, such as those in hospitals, nursing homes, or confined to bed or chair.
The primary cause of pressure ulcers is sustained pressure that stops blood flow to the skin and underlying tissues. Contributing factors include friction, shear forces, moisture, and inadequate nutrition.
Condition and Treatment:
Symptoms:
Redness or discoloration of the skin (Stage I).
Blisters or open wounds (Stages II and beyond).
Pain or discomfort in the affected area.
Possible foul odor or drainage in advanced stages.
Wound Care: Evaluate the wound’s size, depth, and location.
Check for signs of infection
Cleaning: Gently cleanse the ulcer with appropriate solution
Debridement: Removal of dead tissue to promote healing.
Dressings: Applying appropriate dressings to maintain a moist wound environment, protect from infection, and absorb exudate (wound fluid). Advanced therapies may be needed to quicken healing.
Pressure Relief: Regularly repositioning to alleviate pressure on vulnerable skin and bony areas.
Support Surfaces: Using pressure-relieving equipment such as mattresses, cushions or boots to reduce pressure on bony prominences.

FAQs
Pressure injuries can develop quickly, sometimes in just a few hours if the skin is starved of oxygen.
To prevent a pressure ulcer infection, regularly clean and replace the dressings on the pressure injury and surrounding area. Ensure the area is getting enough oxygen by not sitting or lying on it.
Changing position to reduce or remove the pressure on a particular area can be key to preventing pressure ulcers.
